All You Need To Know About Treadmill!
A treadmill is primarily used for walking, running, or climbing in place, mainly for cardio training and improving cardiovascular health.
Discover the ultimate guide to buying a treadmill with 6 key considerations: size and space, motor power, budget, workout programs, treadmill types, and benefits of using a treadmill.
What are specifications and performance of a treadmill?
Motor Power
The motor’s continuous-duty horsepower (CHP) rating determines the treadmill’s overall performance capability. For walking, 2.0 CHP is sufficient. For running and intense workouts, look for 3.0-4.0+ CHP.
Speed Range
Basic treadmills have a 0.5-10 mph speed range, while higher-end models can reach 12-15+ mph for serious runners.
Weight Capacity
Most treadmills support user weights from 250 to 400 pounds, depending on the model and construction quality.
Running surface
The belt size should be at least 20″ wide for walking, and 22″x55-60″ for running to accommodate full stride length. Look for orthopedic or cushioned belts to reduce joint impact.
Incline Range
An incline range of 0-15% is common, with some models offering declines as well. Higher incline capabilities up to 40% allow for more intense hill training.

Components of treadmill
Jivanta takes the stress out of manufacturing by guaranteeing the quality and consistency of every part. Each order is dimensionally and visually inspected to make sure it meets the Jivanta Standard.
Frame
The frame is the foundation that holds the entire treadmill together. It provides support and stability.
Treadmill frames are typically made of steel or aluminum.
Motor
The motor is the power source that drives the rotation of the running belt. Treadmill motors use pulleys and a drive belt to generate horsepower (HP).
HP represents the peak speed, but only for short bursts.
CHP (Continuous horsepower) motors, however, sustain maximum speed for longer periods and endure daily use.
Thus, treadmills with CHP motors are faster, more durable, and generally more expensive.
Display Screen
The display on a treadmill is the panel. Here, you choose a workout program. You can adjust the speed or incline. You also see metrics like distance, progress, and time.
Broadly speaking, you have three categories of options. To increase entertainment value, they are:
- LED Consoles: The classic, basic workhorse. On LEDs, you push buttons to control the device and read data in LED lights. Good for people who want to just hammer out miles or meters and who don’t need a lot of frills.
- LED/LCD Hybrids: These units have some push buttons and LED info around an embedded video screen. Good for people who want to watch videos on the console. They may not need a full touchscreen experience.
- Tablet-style Touchscreen LCDs: Basically a high-end iPad mounted on cardio equipment. These displays have the most flexibility and premium features like streaming workouts.
Running Belt
The running belt is the surface on which you walk or run. It wraps around the front and back rollers.
The belt type and materials matter a lot. They affect how well the treadmill works and how much it costs to own.
There are types of belts:
Single Ply: The treadmill belt is one solid piece of rubber.
2-Ply: The top is rubber and higher quality treadmills use PVC rubber. The underside can be cotton, polyester, urethane, or mono-filament.
3-Ply and 4-Ply: Extra layers provide more heat absorption and cushioning. These layers can be rubber or other materials. Some companies once used carpeted neoprene, but it was discontinued due to disintegration. A 4-ply belt often includes a layer of glue, while a 3-ply belt does not.

Running Board
The deck, under the running belt, supports the belt.
Good treadmills use strong materials. Factories often use medium-density fiberboard (MDF) with a polymer coating to prevent warping.
Deck size is important. Larger decks (22″x60″ or more) give more running space, especially for taller users. Keep the deck surface lubricated. This makes the running belt last longer and runs smoothly.
Rollers
Two main rollers, the front and rear, are essential. The running belt moves around these rollers with the help of the motor. The rollers are usually made of aluminum or steel.
A high-quality treadmill uses a roller made from one solid piece of steel. A heavier roller is better because it has more inertia, which reduces the load on the motor.

Electronics and control systems
Control Panel:
The treadmill control panel is the ‘brain’ that controls all functions. Its quality determines the treadmill’s use and lifespan.
If the control panel fails, the treadmill can’t work. This leads to downtime and raises the risk of injury.
